When I was in high school, my buddy convinced me to try out for the wrestling team.
Not a great idea.
I spent a few afternoons in a smelly sub-basement.
Hugging sweaty guys.
With cauliflower ears.
And bad breathe.
AND the coach wanted me to starve myself so that I could drop a weight class.
That meant starving myself, and not drinking water, for weeks at a time.
When I told my dad what I was doing, he looked at me like I was an idiot.
“Son, the cheerleaders are up in the gym with the basketball players. What are you doing in the basement?”
So, I wasn’t long for the wrestling team.
But I did gain a lot of respect for those guys.
They’re tough cookies.
And I also learned quite a few things.
I remember one time I was wrestling, I was standing up and I was trying to push the guy off the mat.
Then he dropped down, pulled my legs out, and took me to the ground.
I remember the coach screaming at me:
“What the %^&*!!! When he goes high, you go low!!”

If the guy is pushing you up high, go low.
It made a lot of sense.
