My aunt just got back from a trip to Barcelona.
My uncle isn’t much of a traveler, so she went with a group of people from her college.
They spent a week in Spain, flying first to Madrid, and then taking the train to Barcelona.
This might not seem like much of a story.
Except she’s 70.
And she didn’t know anyone on the tour before deciding to go.
She liked Madrid, but she LOVED Barcelona.
She told me about walking down La Rambla, the famous pedestrian walk-way that used to be the heart of the city. It goes from the middle of the city, Plaza Catalunya, down to the port, where there is a MASSIVE statue of Christopher Columbus pointing out to sea. George Orwell wrote about La Rambla in “Homage to Catalunya.” And the NBA Dream Team all walked down that street in 1992 before the Olympics.
She told me about going to a dinner where they ate paella and watched Flamenco dancers. She said that they danced for over two hours in a dining room dining rooms decorated in the style of the famous Alhambra in Granada.
And she told me about La Sagrada Familia the architect Antonio Gaudí’s most famous work. It’s a massive church that has been under construction since 1882 (that’s not a typing error) and isn’t expected to be completed for another decade. She said it was one of the most awe inspiring things she’s ever seen in her life.
I was simply blown away.
Not only by how much she enjoyed herself.
But my how much COURAGE she showed.
Going to a foreign country.
Without anyone you know.
At 70.
I just hope that I have half as much energy and courage when I reach her age.
And I’m trying to make sure that I will.
